Biographies of Speakers
University of Liverpool:
Dr Xin Tuis a Reader in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics at the University of Liverpool. He has been working for many years on interdisciplinary research at the interface of plasma science and chemical engineering directed towards environmental clean-up, fuel and chemical synthesis, and nuclear decommissioning. Significant efforts have been devoted to plasma-catalysis where the combination of cold plasma and heterogeneous catalysis has been used as a promising low temperature process for the oxidation of gas pollutants (e.g. VOCs and PAHs) in waste gas streams and for the conversion of carbon sources (e.g. CH4, CO2, biomass tars and heavy oils) into value-added fuels and chemicals such as hydrogen, olefins, liquid fuels and chemicals and carbon nanomaterials at ambient conditions. Dr. Tu has published over 85 high quality papers in leading international journals such as Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Appl. Catal. B: Environ., ACS Catal., and Green Chem., and has given over 30 invited talks in leading international conferences. He has served as a member of International Advisory or Scientific Board for a number of international conferences and consortiums.
Dr Alexey Sergeevobtained his undergraduate degree from Saint-Petersburg State University and his PhD degree from Moscow State University (2005, Prof. Irina P. Beletskaya), Russia. After a short stay in industry, he conducted postdoctoral studies with Prof. Matthias Beller at Leibniz Institute for Catalysis, Rostock, Germany (2006-2009). In 2009, Alexey moved to the United States to join the group of Prof. John F. Hartwig at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and then at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2012, Alexey returned to Europe to start his independent career at the University of Liverpool and the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy as a Lecturer in Organic Chemistry.
Dr Frédéric Blancgraduated from the School of Chemistry in Lyon (France) in 2004 and obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 2008 from the University of Lyon and the European Center for High Field NMR in Lyon, under the supervision of Prof. Christophe Copéret and Prof. Lyndon Emsley. He studied the structure - dynamics relationship in heterogeneous catalysis and developed new solid state NMR methods to understand the chemistry on surfaces. He then received a Lavoisier fellowship and underwent postdoctoral work at the State University of New York in Stony Brook, NY for three years with Prof. Clare P. Grey, where he got interested in the understanding of the structure elucidation of energy materials with NMR spectroscopy. He then moved to the University of Cambridge as a Marie Curie fellow and looked at the dynamics of oxygens and protons in electrolytes by high temperature NMR spectroscopy. In December 2012, he was appointed to a Lectureship in the Department of Chemistry and the Stephenson Institute for Renewable Energy at the University of Liverpool and promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2016, where he is focusing on the development and application of NMR spectroscopy in materials chemistry.
Professor Jianliang Xiaoreceived a B.Eng. at Northwest University in Xian in 1982. This was followed by an M.Eng. with Profs WU Chi and WANG Junyu at the RIPP in Beijing and a Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Alberta under Prof Martin Cowie. After a postdoctoral appointment with Prof Richard Puddephatt, he joined the ERATO Catalysis Project directed by Prof Noyori. In 1996 he took up a Principal Scientist position at the University of Liverpool, becoming a Lecturer in 1999 and Professor in 2005 in the chemistry department. His research is concerned with the design, development and understanding of molecular catalysts for sustainable chemical synthesis, and he has published ca 220 papers in the area. He is a Changjiang Chair Professor and a Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry. For his team’s work, he was awarded the UK Prize for Process Chemistry Research 2008 and Excelling at Innovation Award of the University of Liverpool 2015.
